After weeks of teasing from series creator Ed Boon, the next entry in the venerable Mortal Kombat series was finally officially announced this morning.
Following on from the hugely critically and commercially successful Mortal Kombat from 2011, this tenth entry in the fighting game series looks to bring back the lauded X-Ray effects that we first saw in that most recent entry. Boasting an excellent single player mode, a well-rounded cast of kombatants and a renewed focus on what initially made the series great, many would say that it was that 2011 entry that rejuvenated the once-flagging series.
Developers NetherRealm Studios followed up Mortal Kombat with the well-received DC Comics fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, and it will certainly be interesting to see if that title ends up influencing Mortal Kombat X at all. Judging from the trailer, it could well be that the stage interactions of Injustice will be making their way into NeatherRealm’s new offering.
Fans have known for some time that a new Mortal Kombat was on its way, but official confirmation that this is a new mainline entry in the series will surely set anticipation towards the title rising. Whilst the trailer released today doesn’t seem to be gameplay footage, it would certainly stand to reason that what we see in the trailer is at least an indication of what NetherRealm hope to achieve graphics-wise. Mortal Kombat X is slated for release in 2015.
