Fans waiting for the full release of crowdfunded series revival Wasteland 2 can now watch the game’s opening cinematic to tide them over to its launch in a few months’ time. Originally shown by director Brian Fargo at London Comic Con, the clip has now been uploaded to the web and can be seen below.
Using a mixture of live action and stock footage, the video does a great job at setting the tone of the apocalyptic near-future that the game takes place in—as well as evoking something of the golden age of PC gaming that Wasteland 2 harks back to.
More than 60,000 backers contributed almost $3 million to the Kickstarter campaign that developers inXile ran in 2012 to fund the production of Wasteland 2. The unparalleled success that the game found on the service came directly in the wake of Double Fine Productions’ Broken Age similarly successful campaign, and played an integral role in the rise of the crowdfunded video game project.
Last year, a beta version of the game was released via Steam Early Access, and impressed fans and critics alike even considering the massive expectations that come with such a huge amount of funding being gathered by Kickstarter. Given that the Early Access version of the game was so well-received, and that development has continued in an effort to iron out any kinks from the beta, Wasteland 2 looks like it could be one of the biggest titles of the year.
A few years ago, many fans would have never thought that a sequel to the 1988 predecessor to the Fallout series would see the light of day. However, that time will come very soon, as it was announced on Kickstarter last week that the game will finally be released in full at the end of August.
