If A Story About My Uncle wasn’t on your radar until now, it perhaps will be after you watch the impressive gameplay trailer devs Gone North Games released earlier today.
Whilst the trailer obviously boasts a very interesting art direction and hints at an intriguing narrative befitting of an indie darling, it’s the traversal mechanics that really set this game apart from the crowd. The high-tech grappling hook that the player character uses to negotiate the game’s dream-like environments looks like it has some real potential for a unique experience.
Cult favourite Mirror’s Edge certainly looks to have been an influence on A Story About My Uncle, not only in its first-person platforming but, as is stated on the title’s Steam Product Page, its tendency towards non-violence. It’s always refreshing to see a game that strives to challenge the player in ways other than direct combat—and it will certainly be interesting to see how the encounter with the one-eyed cave monster depicted at the end of the trailer plays out, given this decision.
A Story About My Uncle will release on Steam on May 28, with no pricing information currently available on the site. If the full game can live up to both the unusual gameplay mechanics, lovely art and compelling story that this trailer suggests it might have in store, then this looks set to be something of a sleeper hit for 2014.
