With the release of The Walking Dead: Season Two, Telltale Games allows gamers to dive into their favorite narrative driven zombie apocalypse once again. While it may be hard to top Season One in the minds of the audience, the second season is shaping up admirably so far with some intense moments and character deaths.
The song is “In the Pines”, plays during the credits to Episode Two, and fits the situation like a glove. A folk song that can be traced back to at least the 1870’s, it was mainly associated with blues artist Leadbelly, but was later popularized by a Nirvana cover. I have listened to several variations of the song, but this one is by far my favorite. Jared Emerson-Johnson’s arrangement is simple and ethereal, fitting seeing as he composed the soundtrack to the game. But the real star is the vocal work done by Telltale animator Janel Drewis. Her voice is haunting and soulful, adding to the already morbid lyrics. Her delivery is what makes this version so special. Without such haunting vocals, the song would not compliment the despair and hopelessness felt at the end of the episode.
The song is absolutely beautiful and just shows how good use of music can enhance a game. Every time I hear this song I think back over the choices I made in the episode, and my anticipation for Episode Three goes through the roof. While you can listen to the song, why don’t you just go here and download it for FREE! You’ll be glad you did.
