Dark Souls was one of the best RPGs of the last console generation. I have already written about how fantastic and unique Dark Souls is; today we will focus on the music of Dark Souls. Choosing one particular moment in the game was difficult. There’s the fantastic song that plays during the fight with Ornstein and Smough, a song that came to haunt many players’s dreams.
Then there is the song that plays during the credits.
But there is one song that sticks out the most in my mind, the final boss song. What makes it so special is how different it is from every other boss song. Nearly all the other boss tracks are bombastic, energetic, and exciting. This one is quiet, subdued, and reflective, quite the opposite from normal last boss fight fare. Having such a subdued song for your final boss battle is an interesting choice, but I believe the decision was the correct choice. The song is simply gorgeous. Don’t believe me? Then here!
The song really underscores one of the most memorable fights in the game and perfectly compliments the somber tone of the final battle. Seeing how the final battle is bittersweet and mournful considering who you fight, the song perfectly captures and sets the mood.
The soundtrack was composed by Motoi Sakuraba. Not only did he compose Dark Souls 1 & 2, his resume is quite impressive including games such as Bravely Default, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, and Tales of Xillia 2 just to name a few. He has also scored anime and films as well.
Dark Souls is a phenomenal game with a soundtrack to die for. Just remember to Praise the sun!
